Increasing Biodiversity

A Swift Box in every home

As part of my professional career, I have been dedicate to maintaining and improving the UK’s biodiversity. The UK adult swift population has decline by 62% in the past 25 years, largely due to a loss of habitat. Therefore, the installation of artificial nesting sites is crucial to boosting the population of the UK’s indigenous bird populations.

The Penrith Swift Network has worked extremely hard to educate people and provide inexpensive swift boxes to the people of Penrith & Solway, built by Men in Sheds.

One of the most effective ways to improve our swift population would be to ensure that all new developments featured a ‘swift brick,’ an inexpensive birdbox that is placed in the wall of a new build which matches the colour work and doesn’t affect the insulation.

Thanks to the hard work of Sue Rowlands and the rest of Penrith Swift Network, Story Homes have agreed to install 196 swift boxes in their new Penrith development. However, I am joining the call to ensure that swift bricks are mandatory in all new housing developments.
