Keep Thirlmere Road Open!

I am proud to support the campaign to re-open the road along the west side of Thirlmere reservoir. It is shocking that two years after Storm Arwen, this key road remains shut.

*January 2024 update*

Thanks to the extremely hard work of all those who got involved to put pressure onto the council and United Utilities, there has been a partial re-opening of the road. A footpath now runs underneath Rough Crag which allows walkers to complete a loop of the lake on foot.

However, the road has only re-opened for those on horseback. The erected barriers and signage make it clear that cyclists are still not welcome!

This closure is more than a nuisance, it could risk lives

The road alongside the west side of Thirlmere reservoir has been closed following Storm Arwen in November 2021. Cars, cyclists and pedestrians are currently forced to take the narrow and busy A591 along the East side of the lake. Alongside adding to the journey time for many commuters and local residents, cyclists now face the potentially fatal hazards of fast-moving heavy vehicles as well as emergency services having limited accessibility to the lake and to Rough Crag.

Cumberland council appear to have taken United Utilities word that the necessary safety works cannot be undertaken. I have written to the council to obtain an evaluation risk of the road when compared to other terrain in the locality. Meanwhile, I call upon the council to delay the permanent closure of this work and use all efforts to require United Utilities to open this public highway.

I call upon the council to make sure this road is reopened

Our mass rally alongside Thirlmere

On November the 5th, I gathered alongside over 1,000 cyclist and pedestrians next to Thirlmere to protest the closure of this road.
